Body Jewellery Size Guide
Body jewellery is measured by both gauge (needle width/thickness) and post length, with different gauges and lengths being more suited to different types of piercings. The post length includes only the piercing post and not any balls or attachments.
Most piercings are performed using the standard sizes, however you can also request different gauges depending on the location and personal preference of the customer.
Below is a general guide of the standard sizing for various piercings, depending on an individuals anatomy there can be variations and it may be a case of trial and error to find your best fit. We recommendĀ measuring a piece you're currently wearing to gain a rough idea prior to purchasing yourĀ new jewellery or ask your body piercer the size they used for the implant.

How to establish your preferred length for bodyĀ jewellery.
The listed length (inches" or millimetres as shown above) refers to the distance between the balls. It is the length of the piercing shaft in fractional inches/millimeters and not the length of the full bodyĀ jewellery.
If you are unsure what size you are, measure a piece of body jewellery that currently fits you correctly and this will assist you in establishing the best size moving forward. You may need to adjust your preferred sizingĀ up or down depending on whether or not the current fit is as snug as you would like or perhaps too tight.
Length Conversion (eg. 3/8" 10mm)Ā
Millimeters | Fractional Inches |
6mm | 1/4" |
8mm (short length) | 5/16" |
10mm (standard sizes) | 3/8" |
11mm (standard sizes) | 7/16" |
12mm | 1/2" |
14mm | 9/16" |
16mm | 5/8" |
19mm | 3/4" |
22mm | 7/8" |
25mm | 1" |
Gauge - width of the shaft (eg. 14g)
BodyĀ jewellery is measured by gauges. The higher the gauge the skinnierĀ the piercing post becomes. For example aĀ 12g post is far thicker than a 19g post.
Ā
Refer to the chart below for specific details.
Gauge | Millimeter | Inches |
20g (standard septum) | 0.81mm | 1/32" |
18g (standard septum) | 1mm | 3/64" |
16g (standard septum) | 1.2mm | 3/64" |
14g (standard navel) | 1.6mm | 1/16" |
12g | 2mm | 5/64" |
10g | 2.4mm | 3/32" |
8g | 3.2mm | 1/8" |
6g | 4mm | 5/32" |
4g | 5mm | 3/16" |
2g | 6mm | 1/4" |
0g | 8mm | 5/16" |
00g | 9.5mm | 3/8" |

316L surgical steel will not tarnish, flake or peel and will last the test of time.
However, all body jewellery, even the basics will still collect particles of dirt and body oils in various areas. We recommend cleaning your jewellery to keep it looking brand new and for maximum hygiene. Simply use dish washing detergent in warm water.
Warning: alcohol can damage and loosen gems, likewise harsh chemicals can also prematurely age your body jewellery.
To remove dirt or build up, use a gentle brush - like a soft bristle toothbrush. Give your jewellery a final wash with disinfectant hand soap to assist killing bacteria.
NOTE: Some dangling jewellery and fancy styles may be comprised of a mixture of metals. Check our full product specifications listed with each product for details aboutĀ whether the piece is suitable for permanent wear and water exposure.
PIERCING CHANGE OVER TIPS
- Step 1: Use a disinfectant hand soap to wash your hands, your navel piercing, and yourĀ body jewellery.
- Step 2: The ball in the captive bead belly ring is referred to as a 'bead' because it has two beaded dents in the side of the balls where it meets the circumference of the piercing shaft. We recommend sitting down when you open a captive bead ring so that if the ball falls out it lands in your lap (nothing worse then lost jewellery balls! argh). The ball is being held in place from the tension of the sphere, to release the tension simply apply outward pressure to both sides of the belly ring.
- Step 3: Likewise, once you insert your new jewellery, line up the beads on either side and slot the ball back into the opened space.
